INMigration

Beyond Borders, a Visual Journey

This exhibition aims to present the viewer with the impact of the action and results of emigrating to the United States, told mostly from the perspective from both sides of the Mexican border.  The title of the exhibition itself is a play on the word immigration and the phrase in migration. Immigration is defined as the “action of coming to live permanently in another country,1” while migration is defined as  “movement of people to a new area or country in order to find work or better living conditions.2” The journey is not easy, nor is it simple and the outcome is not always ideal.  These images express not only the act of migrating, but also the emotions that come from doing so.

Faith plays a central role in the immigration process. Believing that something better lies ahead without certainty of that fact and still embarking on the journey is an act of faith.  Represented alongside of these images of immigration are also images of Christian faith, most especially images of the cross and of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Special thanks goes to Gilberto Cárdenas, Director of the NDCAC, for loaning these works from his extensive personal collection of contemporary Latino art.

Exhibition curated by Alex Schaufele, Art Coordinator of the Crossroads Gallery for Contemporary Art.
