Adapted from the autobiography, Twelve Years a Slave, this American
Playhouse version of the incredible events in the life of Solomon Northup, a free man sold into slavery in 1841, serves as a fascinating, companion piece to the more recent film version. Directed and scored by photojournalist Gordon Parks (Shaft, The Learning Tree), the film stars Avery Brooks (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Spenser for Hire) in a more restrained but no less powerful performance as Northup.
