LOOKING AT ST. JOSEPH COUNTY: A TRAVELING PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT BY LOUIS SABO

The Notre Dame Center for Arts & Culture presents photography exhibition Looking at St. Joseph County through November 18, 2016.   Looking at St. Joseph County is a collection of traditional black and white photographs of contemporary life that Lou Sabo has generously donated on a regular basis to Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County’s permanent archives for over forty years. We would also like to invite the media and the public to attend local photographer Lou Sabo’s artist lecture on November 17, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. at the Notre Dame Center for Arts & Culture, 1045 West Washington Street.

Looking at St. Joseph County is part of the Indiana Bicentennial year celebration and was sponsored by the Historic Preservation Commission.  During the 2016 celebration the exhibit of eight photographs and three portfolios containing more than 350 silver prints has travelled to nine locations including the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture. These photographs document the region showcasing St. Joseph County as a productive and beautiful place to live with a rich past and brighter future. For more detailed information about the travel schedule of the exhibit, please go to StJosephCountyIndiana.com.

Sabo works in black and white film photography printing each image in his darkroom.  This careful attention to his craft showcases itself in the photographs he captures.  Details from documenting Michigan Street at exactly 3:00 pm on February 3, 1968 and again at 3:00 pm on February 3, 2016 to capturing the stillness of a horse in a local field, Sabo documents the evolution of South Bend and special places in unincorporated St. Joseph County in photographs at all times of day and seasons.

More about the artist at LouSabo.com. Lou Sabo’s work is available online through Michiana Memory, the digital collections of the St. Joseph County Public Library, Local and Family History Department, more information at michianamemory.sjcpl.org, search “Louis Sabo Collection”. We welcome you to come see the exhibit and to attend the closing lecture on November 17, 2016 at the Notre Dame Center for Arts & Culture. All events are free and open to the public.
