Join us for a lunchtime lecture on March 23, 2017 by Dr. Linda Przybyszewski titled Getting to Work: Fashion and the Modern Woman. Getting to Work is a lecture connected to Przybyszewki’s research into the Dress Doctors and a part of the Women’s Heritage Month programming happening at the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture.

Dr. Przybyszewski teaches in the History Department at University of Notre Dame where she is an Associate Professor. She earned a Ph.D. in history from Stanford University and is also a skilled dressmaker from a long line of sewing women. She may be the only historian to lecture at the U.S. Supreme Court in a suit that won a ribbon at a county fair. Most recently, she won a Public Scholar award from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Through her research for The Lost Art of Dress, Przybyszewski’s New York Times bestseller, she learned about the Dress Doctors. These women were the products of a Department of Agriculture survey to women in rural areas during the Great Depression. Women wanted to know how to things for their households ranging from how to better utilize their kitchen spaces to how to dress in a flattering, practical way. From their responses spurred the creation of the Home Economics Research Division-- originally one of the few fields that women scientists and doctors could enter.

Przybyszewski describes her lecture Getting to Work as a presentation on how the 20th Century saw the rise of a new kind of woman professional, the kind that gave fashion advice for all the opportunities that the new century offered to women. Eager to dress women for both wage work and home work, the Dress Doctors distilled the principles of good design and shared them with American women. Millions of girls and women learned from radio programs, women's club lectures, 4-H programs, and home economics courses that beauty in dress comes from combining art with function. Whatever the current fashion happens to be, the lessons of good design still hold true.

The Dress Doctors can still teach us something today and we’d love to share some of their wisdom with you. This lecture is free and open to the public on March 23, 2017 at 12:00 pm. Guests are invited to bring their own lunches.
